Art Basel Miami Beach 2026 dates: when the fair happens, how its days run, and the building it fills

December 4 to 6, 2026, after two private days: when Art Basel Miami Beach happens and why, how its days work, every edition since 2002, and the convention center's own history.

At a glance

  • Art Basel Miami Beach 2026 is open to the public from Friday, December 4 to Sunday, December 6, 11 am to 6 pm, at the Miami Beach Convention Center, 1901 Convention Center Drive.
  • The private days come first: Wednesday, December 2 (First Choice cardholders from 11 am, Preview from 4 pm) and Thursday, December 3, with the Vernissage from 4 to 7 pm.
  • A day ticket gets you in from noon, not 11 am. Only First Access tickets and premium passes enter at the opening hour.
  • The fair has opened in the first ten days of December every year since 2002, in the same building, except 2020, when it was cancelled.
  • The convention center has its own history: Cassius Clay beat Sonny Liston there in 1964, and both parties held their national conventions in it in 1972.

Art Basel Miami Beach is the last fair of Art Basel's year and the reason Miami's art calendar peaks in the first week of December. In 2026 it opens to the public on Friday, December 4 and closes on Sunday, December 6, after two private days for collectors. It is the 24th edition, and like every one before it, it fills the Miami Beach Convention Center, a building that was already part of American history before the art arrived.

This guide covers the dates and hours for 2026, why the fair is in December at all, how its days work and how they have changed, and the building itself: what happened in it before 2002 and what you will find around it. The 2026 facts come from Art Basel's visitor and ticket pages, checked on October 24, 2026; the history comes from Art Basel's releases since 2002, the convention center and the City of Miami Beach.

Source: Art Basel's visitor information. The fair opens at 11 am on the public days, but a day ticket's earliest entry is noon, by the time slot you choose; the First Access ticket and the premium passes are the ones that get you in at 11 am, an hour before everyone else (Art Basel). Prices are in our tickets guide, and how the private days work is in how the VIP preview works.

The fair has not announced its 2027 dates. Art Basel's calendar, published in September, runs only to Basel in June 2027.

Why December

The fair is in December because of another fair. When Art Basel was negotiating with Miami Beach in the late 1990s, Art Miami held the convention center every January under a contract that barred any other art fair within 45 days of its dates. That pushed the newcomer into early December, then thought of as the off-season. The collector Norman Braman argued that pre-holiday hotel rates and the weather would bring people anyway (Art Basel). He was right, and a rival's contract gave the fair the month that is now its identity. The story is told in full in how Art Basel came to Miami Beach.

The first edition was set for December 13 to 16, 2001, and postponed after the September 11 attacks; it opened a year later, on December 5, 2002 (e-flux). Since then every edition has fallen in the first ten days of December. On our reading of the dates, the fair ends on the first Sunday on or after December 4, which is why some years look late: in 2006, 2012, 2017 and 2023 it moved into the second week. Art Basel has never stated a rule; it is simply what the record shows.

Miami Beach also closes Art Basel's year. In 2026–27 the fairs run Paris in October, Miami Beach in December, Doha in late January, Hong Kong in March and Basel in June (Art Basel). In 2013 the fair called itself "the favorite winter meeting place for the international art world" (Art Basel, archived).

The only break came in 2020. In September that year Art Basel cancelled the December fair, citing limits on large events, travel restrictions and quarantine rules, and moved the galleries online (Art Basel). It returned in 2021 with 253 galleries and 60,000 visitors (Art Basel). This October the city agreed a new contract that keeps the fair at the convention center through 2031 and bars competing art fairs from the building and nearby sites for 30 days on either side of it, Design Miami excepted (Miami Today).

How the days work, and how they have changed

The week has two halves. The private days belong to the people with cards: collectors, museum directors and curators, advisors and the galleries' best clients. First Choice cardholders have Wednesday from 11 am, Preview cardholders join at 4 pm, and on Thursday both have the whole day, with the Vernissage, the one part of the private days money can buy, from 4 to 7 pm. The public days follow, Friday to Sunday.

It was not always so. In the early years the fair ran Thursday to Sunday, from noon to 8 pm (6 pm on Sunday), after a Wednesday vernissage; in 2004 and 2005 the opening night was held at Art Positions, the young galleries' shipping containers on the beach (e-flux). By the mid-2010s Wednesday had become a private day and Thursday was split, with the Vernissage from 11 am to 3 pm and the public let in from 3 pm (Art Basel, archived). The First Choice and Preview tiers appear by name in 2016 (Art Basel, archived). In 2021 and 2022 the public days ran Thursday to Saturday. Since 2023 the shape has been the one above: two private days on Wednesday and Thursday, three public days from Friday to Sunday, 11 am to 6 pm (Art Basel, archived). Art Basel did not give a reason for the change.

Dates are the fair's own, from its releases and website; from 2023 they are the public days, after two private days. Visitor figures are Art Basel's, as published or as quoted at the time; "not published" means we have not found an official figure. Attendance roughly doubled between 2009 and 2013 and has held at about 75,000 to 80,000 a year since, apart from the return in 2021.

The building: the Miami Beach Convention Center

The convention center opened in 1958 as the Miami Beach Convention Hall, built for $4 million (Miami Beach Convention Center). Its architect was B. Robert Swartburg, who had designed the Delano Hotel (City of Miami Beach). It was expanded in 1974 and again in 1988–89.

It has seen a good deal of history. On February 25, 1964, in Hall C, Cassius Clay took the heavyweight title from Sonny Liston, who failed to answer the bell for the seventh round; soon afterwards Clay took the name Muhammad Ali (Sports Illustrated). In August 1968 the Republican National Convention nominated Richard Nixon there, and in 1972 Miami Beach hosted both parties: the Democrats nominated George McGovern in July, and the Republicans renominated Nixon a month later, the last time one city has held both conventions in the same year (City of Miami Beach). Accepting the nomination, Nixon noted that he had stood "in this Convention Hall 4 years ago" (American Presidency Project). The fair has nodded to that past: in 2003 Taschen launched its Muhammad Ali book at the convention center inside a recreated boxing ring (Art Basel).

The building you visit today is the result of a renovation from 2015 to 2018, led by Fentress Architects of Denver with Arquitectonica of Miami, who wrapped it in about 500 slanted white aluminium fins inspired by ocean waves and manta rays, and West 8 of Rotterdam on the landscape (ENR; Interior Design). The work took three years and about $620 million, and in December 2017 the builders paused so the fair could use the half-finished building. The ribbon was cut on December 4, 2018, in time for that year's fair (WLRN).

It now has 1.4 million square feet, four exhibition halls with about 492,000 square feet of open floor, which the fair fills, and a Grand Ballroom of about 61,000 square feet, where Meridians, the fair's large-scale sector, was shown in 2019 (Miami Beach Convention Center). The renovation also brought public art: Franz Ackermann's mural on the outside walls was the first piece installed (WLRN). Next door, at 17th Street and Convention Center Drive, the 800-room Grand Hyatt Miami Beach topped out in July 2026 and is due to open in late 2027, so expect a construction site beside the fair this year (City of Miami Beach).

Getting in: the rules worth knowing

Art Basel publishes its rules for visitors. The ones that catch people out (Art Basel):

  • Your ticket names your entrance. The building has North, West and East lobbies, and Art Basel uses a dedicated entrance for each ticket.
  • One bag, and no backpacks. One bag per person, no larger than 16 by 8 by 16 inches; backpacks, suitcases and trolleys of any size are not allowed. Coat and bag check is free, in all three lobbies.
  • Single entry on a day ticket. Once you leave on a day or First Access ticket, you cannot come back in; weekend tickets and premium passes allow re-entry.
  • Water, but no other food or drink. A bottle of up to 33 ounces is allowed; food is sold inside and can be eaten only in designated areas.
  • Small cameras only. Personal photos and video are fine, with a camera no larger than 6 by 5 by 3 inches.
  • No face coverings, except for health, religious or disability reasons.
  • Free childcare and wheelchairs. Art Kids offers free supervised care for children aged 5 to 11, with pre-registration, in the East Lobby, Level 2 (Art Basel); free wheelchairs and scooters are at the coat checks.

Around the building

The convention center sits in the middle of Miami Beach's cultural district, and a fair day is easy to extend on foot. Immediately north is the Miami Beach Botanical Garden, free, Tuesday to Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm, and a quiet place to sit between halls (Miami Beach Botanical Garden). Along the north side runs Collins Canal Park, with Joep van Lieshout's sculptures; to the west, across Meridian Avenue, the 5.8-acre Pride Park. South across 17th Street are City Hall and Frank Gehry's New World Center, which opened in 2011, with SoundScape Park in front. A few blocks north on Collins Avenue are The Bass and Collins Park, where Public Art Fund's Between Tides sets out artists' ping-pong tables from November 29 to December 6; both are in our museums guide.
