New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA) · at Ice Palace Studios
More than 130 galleries and art spaces from 63 cities, chosen by peer review: the fair where Miami Art Week's discoveries usually start.
If you see one fair besides Art Basel, make it NADA: it is where the week's discoveries usually start, and the dealers run it. The New Art Dealers Alliance is a nonprofit founded in 2002 by a group of New York galleries, and its Miami fair has run since 2003, when it opened with 35 exhibitors; by 2004 The Art Newspaper was calling it Art Basel's most successful satellite.
The 24th edition brings more than 130 galleries and art spaces from 63 cities and 27 countries to Ice Palace Studios in Downtown Miami, chosen through a competitive application and peer review. Expect smaller booths and younger programmes than at the convention center, and, as the Observer put it, a more accessible way in: 45 galleries are here for the first time, and NADA Projects gives 25 more a space of their own. Ten exhibitors are based in Miami or Miami Beach, among them Dot Fiftyone Gallery, PRIMARY, The Living Room and Oolite Arts.
Watch what the museum buys. Part of every ticket funds the NADA Acquisition Gift for the Pérez Art Museum Miami, now in its ninth year; last year the fund was doubled to $20,000 with the Knight Foundation, and PAMM bought three works, among them one by the Yanomami artist Sheroanawe Hakihiiwe from the Caracas gallery ABRA. This year ABRA brings him a solo booth. Give it two to three hours, ask the dealers about the work, and buy tickets online: only a limited number are sold at the door.
