Satellite fair · Miami Beach · since 2012
Untitled Art · at On the sand at Ocean Drive & 12th Street
More than 170 galleries and non-profits from 36 countries, on the sand at Ocean Drive and 12th Street: the beach fair, now in its 15th edition.
Come to UNTITLED for the way it is chosen as much as for the view. Most fairs pick their galleries through a committee of other dealers; UNTITLED's exhibitors are selected by its curatorial team, as they have been since Jeffrey Lawson founded the fair in 2012. The first edition that December had 43 exhibitors in a light-filled tent on the sand at Ocean Drive and 12th Street, which the critic Paddy Johnson compared to Frieze at a smaller scale, and the fair still sets up on the same stretch of beach; it now runs a second fair in Houston.
The 15th Miami Beach edition is the largest yet: more than 170 galleries and non-profit organizations from 36 countries and territories, 53 of them showing for the first time. There is no single artistic director now; the executive director, Clara Andrade Pereira, works with a guest curator for each section. Agustina Ferreyra gives 18 galleries a booth each for one artist in Artist Spotlight; Willem Molesworth curates Nest, 28 younger galleries on booths partly paid for by the fair, with a focus on East Asia; and Damîen Dakota curates Special Projects, installations placed around the floor, with artists still to be announced. Main holds the rest.
Nest is the section to watch: five of its past galleries, among them Bolanle Contemporary of London and PerezPuig of San Juan, have moved up to Main this year. Among the artists the fair highlights are Michael Joo, who is in this year's Venice Biennale, at Kavi Gupta, and Lucia Hierro, who has a presentation at the Guggenheim, at Marc Straus. The fair also runs an on-site podcast series of talks.
Miami is well represented: local exhibitors include Durban Segnini Gallery, ALA Projects, QUEUE Gallery and Women Artists Archives + Media, and the Non-Profit sector brings Oolite Arts and Dimensions Variable. Give it two to three hours. Public days run Wednesday to Sunday, after a VIP and press preview on Tuesday, December 1; buy tickets online before you go.
