Design Miami · at Convention Center Drive & 19th Street
Collectible design from the 20th and 21st centuries, from furniture to lighting, at a fair a short walk from the Art Basel convention center.
Design Miami is the one fair in the week for objects rather than pictures, and the easiest to add: it stands across Convention Center Drive from Art Basel, and Art Basel sells a $132 ticket that covers a day at each. It deals in collectible design, meaning furniture, lighting and objects from the 20th and 21st centuries, made in small numbers and sold like art.
Craig Robins, the developer behind the renewal of the Miami Design District, founded it in 2005, and in 2010 it moved from the Design District into a pavilion beside the convention center, next to Art Basel. It now runs a second flagship fair in Paris each October, and Basic.Space announced its acquisition of the company in October 2023.
It is also the fair with the most to prove. Last December ARTnews counted 15 exhibitors who had not returned, citing tariffs and collectors' preference for the Paris edition, and the fair answered with younger dealers and more Curio, its small installations in the spirit of a cabinet of curiosities. The 22nd edition runs from December 1 to 6 under the theme Unveiling, with Charlene Prempeh as curatorial director. Seventeen galleries are listed so far, among them Carpenters Workshop Gallery, R & Company, Boccara Gallery, Adrian Sassoon and Miami's Mindy Solomon, with nine Curio presentations including Brodin, klove and Victoria Yakusha Gallery.
Look closely rather than walk fast: much of the work is made by hand, and the dealers can tell you how. Give it one to two hours, ideally before Art Basel's public days.
